Enjoy the Outdoors with Sporting Events and Summer Fun

Summer is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the warm weather by hosting a sporting event, open day, or summer fayre. You don’t have to go far – even just sitting outside and soaking up the sounds of summer can be a delight.

Activity ideas to share with your residents this season:

1. Plan a Cricket, Tennis, or Football Tournament

Why not host your own sporting event? You can follow the recent events on TV and bring the action to your own care home. This doesn’t have to be a one-day affair—it can stretch over three days!

  • Cricket: We have a cricket set in stock that is designed for seated use, so everyone can participate. Care staff can serve as runners, while more active residents can field, and others can cheer or keep score. You’ll also need a couple of umpires to oversee the game.
  • Football: Our Football Fun Pack allows for a variety of game styles, including 5-a-side, seated, or walking football with a jumbo inflatable ball. Just add the players, referees, and cheerleaders, and don’t forget to cut up the oranges for half-time!
  • Tennis or Badminton: We’ve got tennis kits in stock if you fancy a traditional game with strawberries and cream on the side. If tennis is too fast-paced, we also offer badminton sets or balloon swatters for a slower, more relaxed version.

No matter the sport, make the most of sunny days by engaging residents and staff in fun and light-hearted competition. You can even get creative with activities like welly throwing, bowling, or boules, using your activity cupboard supplies!

2. Afternoon Tea

After all the excitement of the tournament, nothing beats a delicious afternoon tea. Get residents involved by preparing cakes, scones, sandwiches, and pastries. Add mint, ice, and fruit to jugs of drinks to create refreshing beverages, and decorate the tables with bunting, brightly coloured napkins, table covers, doilies, and platters.

Encourage conversations about the day’s events and take photos to share with family and friends. You can even add to the fun by playing music and organising a sweepstake for the ongoing sporting events.

Don’t forget to download our UEFA Euro 2024 sheet ahead of the first game on Friday, 14th June, and follow us on Instagram where we’ll post updates on the games to help you plan your events. Decorate the home in team colours, enjoy themed food from the competing countries, and play games like “Name the Scorer” or “What’s the Score?”

3. Garden Scavenger Hunt

A scavenger hunt is a perfect outdoor activity for all ages. Download our scavenger hunt card, print enough for all participants, and hand them out with pencils. As residents wander through the garden, they can mark off the items they find.

After the hunt, gather everyone for refreshments and discuss their findings. You can even create a quiz based on the scavenger hunt:

  • Where in the garden is…?
  • What colour is…?

For more garden fun, try our Garden Bingo Game. Hand out bingo cards with pictures of garden items, use cut-out images as calling cards, and have a prize ready for the winner—maybe an extra cupcake!

4. Strawberries Are in Season

It’s the perfect time to enjoy fresh strawberries! Why not download our free recipe card and make some delicious strawberry treats with residents?

In the Garden
