This Mothering Sunday, why not give a really thoughtful gift to a mother that is elderly and possibly living alone or who maybe is living with dementia. This article shows us that there may be added benefits to a soft animal companion than we thought…
New studies are finding that cuddling may actually do more for us than we think! Doctors working on trials in Canada have identified a specific hormone that is released during close contact with loved ones (especially prevalent in mothers with infants) called Oxytocin. The hormone has been found to have a direct effect on emotions and can lead to changes such as increased generosity and lessening fearfulness.
A group of patients are currently undergoing tests with Oxytocin to monitor its effect on their brain cell activity, which may lead to it being used for people with dementia to help with altered personality changes.
Activities to Share work closely with dementia specialists and already supply a range of products specially designed to encourage the cuddling instinct. Our Empathy dolls are the size and weight of a real infant and will bring back memories of motherhood. Our cute Emily doll is a soft-bodied doll with eyes that close who comes complete with a dummy and is just the right size to fit snugly into the crook of your arm – we even have a beautiful wicker pram for those who want to show her off!
