Soft clay can be used in so many ways
No kiln needed – air dries with no need for heat
Makes a lovely, tactile activity for older people in care homes and especially so for anyone living with a dementia or with a sight impairment
You don’t even have to make a finished item – just manipulating the clay helps with fine motor skills, hand/eye coordination, and concentration levels
Acrylic paint is recommended for finishing
- Add a couple of drops of scented oil to engage all the senses – can be particularly good for anyone who is confined to bed.
- Roll out clay and cut out discs with bottle tops (different sizes are good) then make a hole at one edge with a pencil. When dry, paint with acrylic paint to seal and thread lengths of garden twine or string through – hang in groups from a tree for a wind chime with a difference. NB: Can add sequins to catch the light.
- Using a heart-shaped cutter – roll out and cut out shapes. Paint and write a thoughtful message on – leave around for others to be inspired.
- Roll out some clay the size of your hand and then Using our cutting clay tool set place a hand on the clay and cut around, remove excess clay and shape your fingers to make a personal tea light holder or snake dish. When dry decorate with acrylic paints
